Global network of geoparks

UNESCO Global Geoparks (UGGp) are geoparks certified by the UNESCO Global Geoparks Council as meeting all the requirements for membership in the Global Geoparks Network (GGN). GGN is both a network of geoparks and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) agency that manages the network.

The Agency was founded in 2004 in partnership with the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS). The Network was created to preserve Earth's geological heritage, as well as to promote sustainable research and development by interested communities. To achieve these goals, they adopted the concept of a geopark, a term that has already been used to refer to one of the proposed parks. Geoparks were conceived as " unified geographical areas where objects and landscapes of international geological significance are managed on the basis of a holistic concept of protection, education and sustainable development.

Since the geopark, of course, did not meet all these requirements, compliance with them required significant work of the country in which the geopark was to be located. In fact, the park had to be not only protected, but also sustainably extended to the public. In 2015, UNESCO member States approved the change to its current name.

Since 2015, the application and appointment process has been governed by the UGGp Charter and Operating Guidelines. As of April 2023, there were 195 UGGPS in 48 countries. Currently, GGN member sites are located on five of the seven continents, but currently there are none in Antarctica or Australia. China is the country with the largest number of global geoparks.
