World Sparrow day – March 20
Since 2010 Indian and British ornithologists have proposed to mark March 20 as world Sparrow day (worldsparrowday.org).
There is an opinion that the house Sparrow as one of the closest feathered neighbors of man can act as a biological indicator, and the state of the population of this species can be judged on changes in the environment.
In a number of areas of its vast range, the house Sparrow disappears from the streets of cities. The reasons for this phenomenon are still not completely clear. The population is declining in both Europe and Asia. The reasons given are the reduction of insects during their breeding season, diseases caused by high levels of pesticides in cereals, the disappearance of nesting sites in cities due to their reconstruction, the reduction of green urban areas and the destruction of trees, which again leads to the death of insects necessary for feeding Chicks.
World Sparrow Day is a reminder of birds that are not yet threatened with destruction or extinction, but which, despite their wide distribution and abundance, may well be at the fatal line.
Within the territory of the former USSR, there are 11 species from the Passerine family Passeridae. On the territory of the Yangan-Tau Geopark in the Salavatsky district of the Republic of Bashkortostan, there are two species: the field Sparrow (Passer montanus) and the house Sparrow (Passer domesticus).
This year, the Union for the protection of birds of Russia is actively involved in a program to study the situation with the house Sparrow in our country and encourages everyone to participate in it. Especially since sparrows-they are nearby, you do not need to go somewhere far away to study and protect them.
