22 May
International day for biological diversity
May 22 is the international day for biological diversity.
Earth is inhabited by many species of plants and animals. Each of them performs important functions. Biological diversity is the diversity of life on the planet, which is now rapidly declining. Plants are dying out, animals and forests are disappearing from the face of the Earth... This is largely due to the active human activity.
Concern about the future of life on our planet was expressed in the fact that at the UN Conference on environment and sustainable development, held in 1992 in Rio de Janeiro, the entire world community was to pay attention to the conservation of biological diversity – both individual species and entire ecological systems.
Since 2001, the international day for biological diversity has been celebrated annually on 22 may.
